On Friday, 20th September 2024, the 20th anniversary of the first Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) certificates will be celebrated.
The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) sends a clear message to those aspiring to lead the charge towards a more sustainable future: “If not now, when?” . Established in 2002 SocEnv set out on the mission to promote excellence in environmental practices across industries.
SocEnv’s first major objective was to create a chartered designation to professionalise this work. In 2004, the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) designation was introduced through a Royal Charter, providing a crucial platform to drive environmental change.
Twenty years later, the need for change has only intensified, as the world faces climate, biodiversity, and environmental crises. On 20th September 2004, the first cohort of 65 CEnv professionals received their accreditation, forming the foundation of a community that now numbers nearly 8,000 and continues to lead the push for sustainability.
As the demand grows for professionals equipped with the knowledge and experience to address today’s pressing environmental challenges—both globally and locally—the CEnv designation stands as a testament to expertise, dedication, and professionalism across all sectors of environmental practice.
How do I get CEnv?
You can apply for CEnv through demonstration of the appropriate qualifications and experience against the competencies required. The general requirement is to have a degree in a related or underpinning subject, plus significant experience of the environmental field you work in. Qualifications less than a degree may also be accepted, if your demonstrable experience shows that you are equipped to degree level.
